Prenatal Care

Pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant? Prenatal care, which is covered at 100% by most insurance plans, is key. Regular visits to an OB/GYN for physical exams, ultrasounds and blood tests are just part of the picture. Pregnant or soon-to-be pregnant women also need to take at least 400 micrograms of folic acid daily, monitor diabetes, avoid smoking and other drugs, and maintain a healthy weight. By following this advice, women can avoid harm to themselves (high blood pressure, diabetes, preeclampsia) and their unborn child (fetal alcohol syndrome, neural tube defects and low birth weight).
