Try Something New Challenge

There’s never a bad time to shake things up and try something new! We’re here to help you get started. Each week this month, check back for ideas on ways to change up your routine.

Week 1: Get creative.

  • Make something artistic. Whether it’s a painting class (wine optional), drawing a friend or family member, or even using an adult coloring book, let those creative juices flow. Especially if you’re not usually artistic, stretching your artsy muscles will jumpstart your brain – and you’ll have some fun!
  • Write it out. Take some time this week to write things down. Journal how you’re feeling. Write a short story. Transcribe a treasured memory, or even something as simple as writing down a list of things you’re grateful for. Taking the time to write things down (bonus points for longhand!) helps you get organized and feel productive and present.
  • Listen to some new music. Step out of your comfort zone! Skip your tried and true playlist and listen to a new artist. Streaming services like Spotify and Pandora curate playlists for you based on what you listen to. Try one out, or search out a new genre completely. You never know when you might find a new favorite artist!

Week 2: Cook up something fresh.

  • Revisit a food you dislike. As a kid, many of us hated broccoli or Brussel sprouts. But are they truly as bad as we remember? Retry one of your most disliked foods – there may be a way of cooking it that makes it taste way better than you ever thought.
  • Try a new spin on an old favorite. Love tacos? You probably have a favorite restaurant or recipe you stick with. But switching ingredients or how things are cooked can make an old favorite into something new and exciting.

Try this Taco Lasagna recipe on your next Taco Tuesday!

Taco Lasagna

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound ground beef, turkey, or chicken
  • ½ cup chopped green pepper
  • ½ cup chopped onion
  • 2/3 cup water
  • 1 envelope taco seasoning
  • 1 can of black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 can Mexican diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 6 8-inch flour tortillas
  • 1 can refried beans
  • 3 cups shredded Mexican cheese blend

Directions:

  1. Cook the meat, green pepper and onion in a large skillet over medium heat until the meat is brown; drain. Add taco seasoning and water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for uncovered for 2 minutes. Stir in black beans and tomatoes. Simmer uncovered for 10 minutes.
  2. Place 2 tortillas in a greased 13×9 inch baking dish. Spread with half of the refried beans and half of the beef mixture; top with 1 cup of cheese. Repeat layers and top with remaining tortillas and cheese.
  3. Cover and bake at 350° for 25-30 minutes or until heated through and cheese is melted.

Come back next week – we’re talking new ways to explore the outdoors.

There’s never a bad time to shake things up and try something new! We’re here to help you get started. Each week this month, check back for ideas on ways to change up your routine.

Week 3: Spend time outside.

  • Explore your surroundings. You likely know your way around your neighborhood, but there’s always more to discover! Search for a park of walking trail near you that you’ve never visited and get walking!
  • Plant something. Planting, whether it’s flowers, herbs or veggies, helps you get closer to nature and be productive. If you have a yard, plant some flowers or start a garden. Limited on space? Get an indoor plant for a windowsill or some flowerboxes for your patio or porch.
  • Visit a local farmers market. Many cities host a weekly or monthly famers market with local farmers and vendors. You can get some outside time and some fresh produce, all while supporting local businesses!

Next week we’ll kick that routine into high gear with some workout tips.

Week 4: Try a new workout.

  • Expand your horizons. Ever tried kickboxing? Many gyms offer free tryout classes. If you’re a runner (or just want to be!) sign up for a 5k and get training. Never tried yoga? Stretch it out. The point is to do something different than your normal routine.
  • Mix up your routine. There are so many different workouts out there – switch it up! Add some new routines to your standard rotation to keep things fresh. Muscle and Strength has a database of hundreds of free workout routines, ranging in difficulty level and type of workout, so you can focus on weight loss, strength building, and more.

Thanks for trying new things with us this month! Hopefully you found some new activities to enjoy moving forward.
