Community Week Challenge

It’s always a good time to help others! Food banks, churches and local charities can use your help now more than ever. Whether you’re sorting food, delivering meals or organizing donations, you can help others while social distancing and wearing a mask. Check out VolunteerMatch to find opportunities near you.

Donations make a huge difference to a community. Money is of course always useful, but there are other ways to provide help.

  • Giving blood is always appreciated, but especially during a health crisis. Click here to find a Red Cross donation center near you.
  • Donate canned goods to your local food bank.
  • Clean out your closet and donate clothing you no longer need. Just make sure you’re following any guidelines for safe donation.

We’ve all had less contact than usual this year. Spend some time reconnecting with people in your community.

  • Take a few minutes each day to reach out to a loved one you haven’t spoken to in a while – a phone call doesn’t take long and can go a long way!
  • Find a pen pal. Many local nursing homes are accepting letters for residents. Contact one in your area and make someone’s day with a handwritten note.
  • Start a virtual (or social-distanced) book club! Click here for some ideas to get you started.

Our communities have had a hard year – coming together to support will help everyone.

  • Support local artists. Many theatres, museums and concert halls have had to close. You can help those affected by buying local artists’ books and music, joining virtual livestreams, or buying advance tickets for rescheduled events.
  • Local restaurants may have had to close. Continue to support by ordering takeout, purchasing gift cards or dining in safely.
  • Tip extravagantly. Servers and food delivery workers are working extra hard right now, especially those who weren’t able to work for a time. Make sure to tip well to show them they’re appreciated.

Don’t forget about an important part of your community – you!

  • Self-care matters! If you’re not taking care of yourself, how can you help others? Take time to focus on your mental health. Click here for some self-care ideas.
  • Looking for some fun me time? Try a new podcast!
  • Keep yourself healthy. Don’t forget to eat well, exercise, and follow any CDC guidelines and precautions.
